Processing Credit Card Payments for a Traveling Business

Posted By Misty Mountain on April 18, 2008 @ 3:45 pm

During the summer, I travel across the country attending fairs and exhibitions with my business.  We specialize in custom children’s books and we find that there is a large market for what we offer at the events we attend.

One of the largest challenges that we have had in the past few years was increasing demand for Interac and credit card payments.  We had previously used the old style carbon copy credit card processing method but had found that we received many chargebacks.

We contacted the merchant account services company that we deal with to see if they can provide us with the wireless payment processing machine.  They were happy to provide us with that service and am looking forward to the increased revenue that we should experience this summer as we will be able to accept all types of payments from our customers.

Creating a New Header Graphic

Posted By Misty Mountain on April 17, 2008 @ 2:23 pm

Though I am happy with the general layout of my website, the header graphic leaves something to be desired.  Even though the website is selling art online, or header image looks very much like a three-year-old drew the picture.

Instead of trying to attempt to create our own graphic, we submitted tenders to couple of graphic designers in town along with our requirements for them to come up with a header that would exemplify what we are offering as an art dealer.

Though it took a couple of weeks, the graphic designers that we submitted our requests to have come up with their own unique spin on the perfect header for our site.  We will have to get the design approved by the board, and then we will be able to put the winning header on our site.  It will be nice to finally have a professional image as opposed to looking like a child may the graphics for our site.

Looking at Online Auctions

Posted By Misty Mountain on April 16, 2008 @ 6:07 pm

I have been looking at online auction sites and in forums in an effort to find a good web store to buy and take over.  You see, we specialize in buying and flipping websites, and our speciality is in shopping sites.

So we have been on the lookout for any e-commerce that is not performing well, but shows potential.  We use a system that we have developed to determine if a site qualifies or not for our needs.

Lately, we have been looking for sites that will work with the ecommerce package that we are currently using.  It would be a shame if we had to use another platform for our stores as we are very happy with our current service.

Speaking of our current service, they are nice enough to provide us with aspdotnetstorefront hosting.  It has been very reliable and there support has been great.

Well, I should look some more and hopefully we will be able to find a good deal today.

Product Development Consultants

Posted By Misty Mountain on @ 4:15 pm

I would like to think that I’ve come up with some really good ideas for some great inventions.  Sure, I might be a little biased because they are my ideas, but I’ve had a good response from those with whom I shared my ideas with.

Even though I have had good feedback regarding my invention ideas, I have decided that I need an experienced and impartial opinion from a third party that has no vested interest in what I think.  I figure that way, I will be able to get a real answer to determine what to do from that point on.

I found a company that specializes in product development and offers consultations to inventors to help them decide whether they have a great invention or need to get back to the drawing board.  The meaning is scheduled for next week and I look forward to getting their verdict on my ideas.  It will be just nice to know whether I should be looking to develop my inventions or just realize that they are pipe dreams.

Better Than a Correspondence Class

Posted By Misty Mountain on April 15, 2008 @ 3:49 pm

There been a couple times in my life where I considered taking a correspondence class to further my education.  Even though it seemed like a great idea to me, I’ve always been worried that I wouldn’t get all the coursework done, or that my silence would get lost in the mail.  I figured that it would be more of a hassle than it was worth so I have avoided them completely.

But when I learned that there were now a few places where you get college degrees online, I thought that it might be a good time for me to start learning again.  Perhaps if I took some classes, I might be able to get a better job and a higher salary.

I will have to decide between the health care degrees online or the online paralegal degrees.  Before I do that, I will have to look at the job market for both degrees and make my decision from there.

Building a New Computer

Posted By Misty Mountain on @ 3:31 pm

I have decided that it is time for me to get a new computer.  Mine has been very good to me for the past five years, but honestly, it is time for an upgrade.  It is running a little too slow for my liking, so I think it is time for it to be retired.

But, it has been a long time since I have looked at desktop computers and I wonder if it is still better to build PC or get a factory assembled one.

Well, whether it is cheaper or not, I am just like a little kid who likes to build their computer.  So that is the route that I will take.  While looking at the components, I noticed that you can build a small computer instead of creating a hulking machine - and I think that I will go that route.

I think I will have to look closely at the tradeoffs between the size of the machine and its’ power before I finally buy all the components I need.  But, I am already getting excited that I will get to build a computer again - it has been too long.

Finding the Best Credit Card

Posted By Misty Mountain on April 14, 2008 @ 7:34 pm

I decided it is time for me to get a new credit card.  With the extra income that I am making at my new job, I decided I should maybe upgrade from a plain Jane basic card to something that would give me some sort of rewards.

But I’m not the type of person that just rushes out and gets the first thing that I see.  Instead, I like to shop around and make an informed decision.

So what I decided to do, is to check out some credit card reviews on different websites to make sure that I’m getting not only a good deal but one of the few excellent credit cards on the market.  Sure, this will take me some time, but I think that by doing my do diligence it will be all worth it.

I am still in the process of finding a few sites that have good reviews on the credit cards available at the moment.  Once I have those figured out I will begin my research and see if I can find a new card that will work for me.

Admitting I Was Wrong

Posted By Twyla on @ 2:46 pm

When my husband opened a sporting goods store I had no idea what we were really getting into.  I figured he would be selling ice skates and soccer balls.  I had no idea that the vast amount of items it took to have a good sporting goods store.

I stood and stared at him in shock and awe when he ordered a whole bunch of wall tents.  I asked him where he thought we were going to have room for these and he just shrugged it off as if to say our business would fail if he did not have them.  I guess this is why I let him do the ordering and I tried to ignore, as best I can, when I think he is making a crazy business decision.

Much to my surprise, the tents sold like hotcakes.  I guess it was a little to my dismay as I hate to be wrong and I hate it even more when he is right.  From now on, I think I will just keep my mouth shut and let him run his business as he knows how and I really don’t.

My New Favorite Website

Posted By Twyla on @ 1:37 pm

I found the greatest website the other day. A friend told me about Kijiji and I decided to go and take a look. I was shocked and amazed at the bargains I found on the site. I figured, at first, that it would be more of a computerized garage sale than it would be of anything useful to me. Boy, was I wrong, and I am glad that I was.

I found some great equipment on there. I found things that I would never find at a garage sale and yet, I found them at garage sale prices. I would have to say that my best deal yet, was the purchase of two skid steer buckets with teeth. I needed these and I was going to buy them brand new within the next few weeks.

I have saved myself hundreds of dollars already and it has only been a little over a week. I promise not to be a skeptic anymore, as my friend was right and there were some really great deals. I have found great deals every day and I will admit that this is now my absolute favorite website.

Need My Television

Posted By Twyla on @ 9:30 am

I have always liked to study in front of the television. I know that this is not recommended, but I always did just fine and it relaxed me while I did my homework. I even wrote my college application essay in front of the TV and that turned out really great. I think a big thing is that people just need to find out what works for them and this works for me.

I have been working on a research paper and so there are books and papers strewn about the room in front of the TV. I like to work on it during the commercials when my favorite shows are on and when they are not on, I just tune into a music station and work the night away on my paper.

When I had to do an online essay for one class, I even parked my laptop in front of the TV. I just cannot seem to get any studying or homework done if I do not have a TV on. I think maybe it is a habit that started very early on in childhood, but it works for me now, so I have absolutely no intention of stopping.
