As the mother of a college freshman, I am unhappy with the amount of credit cards for students that are available. My son came home last weekend and was proud to show us that he had three credit cards now. This was ridiculous, as he did not understand the responsibility of being a credit card owner.

I think these college student credit card applications are handed out like candy because these kids don’t think about being in debt. To them, someone is offering them free money to have a good time in college. A lot of these kids are going to have debt problems for the rest of their lives and it all starts with these cards that they are getting in college.

I am not against all college student credit cards. In fact, I don’t think it is a bad idea for them to have one with a low limit. But, three with moderate limits is too much and they will find themselves in trouble. We convinced our son to leave two cards with us, and he took one back to school with him. I hope that he is smart with it.
